Today's show features coverage of the Bakken Pipeline Resistance Meeting held in Ames City Auditorium this past weekend, an upcoming art show (and reception this Saturday) celebrating Ames history, and the history behind the actual "birthday" of Ames on December 17. Organizer Andrea Basche and reporter Susan Franzen recapped the anti-pipeline meeting, which drew 280 attendees, laying out the major reasons people are opposing it and correcting the misinformation shared by the pipeline company. After a musical interlude courtesy of Ames singer-songwriter Paul Doffing, we hear about an upcoming art show at Gallery in the Round in Ames from Tibi Chelcea, the organizer. Finally, Alex Fejfer of Ames Historical Society fills us in on the dirty dealings of Cynthia Duff, without which Ames would not exist, along with the all-day celebration planned for Dec. 17 in Ames.

How do we talk with youth about difficult topics like Ferguson, MO? How do we encourage them to take an active role in the world? Hosts Gale Seiler and Greta Anderson talk with Jeremy Nesoff visiting Ames this week from the organization Facing History and Ourselves, which presents curricula that use past events like the Little Rock Nine integration battle to build students' capacity for empathy, civic engagement and critical thinking. Jeremy is joined by Chad Zmolek, one of several Ames High School teachers implementing this framework, and Katie Bruna, associate professor at the ISU School of Education, who helped make the visit happen.

After a preview of this weekend's Central Iowa Symphony holiday concert with CIS board president Sam Wormley, we air a lecture brought to the ISU campus by The Salt Company entitled "Environmental Ethics: A Christian Perspective". The presenter, Todd Daly of the Urbana Theological Seminary, explains the theology behind conservative Christians' climate change denial and explores how a theology centered on the figure of Christ as the reconciler of creation provides a richer context for the great environmental challenges we face.

County Reporters Paul Wierson and Susan Franzen took a road trip to Boone to speak with Fenner Stevenson, at the Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad about the Santa Train.

Then they visited Susan Schafer at the Book Shoppe about the Boone Area Merchants Association. Kurt Philipps from the convention and Visitor's Bureau told them about the Christmas Activites planned throughout Boone County.
