A short tour around our listening area showed a variety of innovations for bringing lively activities with social distancing as people gather in schools and theaters. Paul Wierson joined us with Paul Clark producer of the Norsemen Network broadcasting sports for fans in the Roland-Story School District.  Then we visited Erin Rovey, owner of the Boone Theater, which perseveres in their vision "to give our customers a big city cinema experience in a more personalized environment, all at a fair price."  Their website provides Boone Theater COVID-19 Measures. Next stop Nevada's Talent Factory with owner Larry Sloan describing how he is providing entertainment for the Nevada community, while developing a world class venue for live performers.  Our last stop was with the Ames Community Theatre performing Savannah Sipping Society in partnership with CY Stephens Auditorium. ACTORS president, Stan Rabe, described the double cast (two equal casts of four) each performing twice.  The cast members come in from Boone, Roland, and Collins. 

Lawsuits, Testing, Barn Owls on the Porch

Our show today started with news interviews with ISEA (Iowa State Education ) President, Mike Beranek describing the lawsuit against Gov, Reynold for her return to school order, speakers from the Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement virtual Convention "Rooted in Justice" who also have a lawsuit to protect clean water, and, finally Steve Sullivan,  director of marketing and community relations at Mary Greeley Medical Center, telling us the details of the new drive through Test Iowa Clinic for coronavirus at the ISU Industrial Park. Shifting to our very special Labor Day event the  "Last Waltz Concert" with the Barn Owl Band with musical guests-- the Barn Owl Band on Paul and Sherri  front porch at 604 Hodge from 5:00 - 8:00 PM on September 7

Women's EqualityDay, Restoring Voting Rights to Felons

Story County Auditor Lucy Martin told us how her office keeps track of voter registrations and organizes both mail-in and in person elections.  Carolyn Klaus of the League of Women Voters described the locations and process for registering and updating your voting registration. Karen Kedrowski, director of the Carrie Chapman Catt Center for Women and Politics, gave us a brief history of the century of struggle for suffrage that culminated just 100 years ago today in the ratification of the 19th amendment granting all women the right to vote.  Speaking about the recent Executive Order 7 by Gov. Kim Reynolds restoring voting rights to felons, Al Womble chair of the Democratic Black Caucus described the hurdles in educating felons and parolees (who did not have their voting rights restored) how to register, vote, and which rights they now have.

KHOI environmental Reporter Pat Schlarbaum speaks with Yankton Sioux Chief Loren Zephier about the tradition and culture of all things coyote.

Del Christensen, Executive Director of Iowa Resource for International Service (IRIS)

explains how IRIS works around the world sponsoring projects and individuals to promote international understanding, development, and peace, and brings students, business people, government leaders from all over the world to Iowa. He announced the IRIS Peace Day 5K International Festival on September 20th, to celebrate the people who come here and to celebrate the United Nations International Day of Peace. Ames Public Relations Officer Susan Gwiasda gives an update on tree removal after the storm and reports that, in response to disappointing lack of cooperation from ISU students in safety precautions against the pandemic, the AMes City COuncil has asked their attorney to draft a proposal for a city ordinance for face coverings.

Director of Recreation in Ames, Keith Abraham, reports that a new clubhouse is being built at Homewood Golf Course, a New Park was dedicated at Sunset Ridge, and a commemorative stone was dedicated at Ada Hayden Park with Irc Klaas' portrait being added to other historically important environmentalists.

Following Leanne Harter's  monthly report of adaptations being made in Story County offices and parks made necessary by the Derecheo and COVID-19,  Chad Hart, Extension Grain Market Specialist, joined us.  He spoke with us not only about the catastrophic damage to corn and soybeans, but also how crop prices in other states and markets in Mexico and China will affect the Iowa farm economy throughout the year.  Following this revealing information we had a follow up from the program on Monday (August 10 -- the morning that the Derecheo hit our area) when we heard from an organization called Iowans for a Safer Return for Learning.  On their Facebook page they featured a video called  "Science is Real-Ask the Experts!"  We closed out the last half of our program with significant excerpts from that presentation. Iowans for a Safer Return to Learning

Denis Hart gives a summary of Iowa news from the past week.

A Week of Action was organized by Iowans for a Safer Return to Learning, a coalition of Iowa groups, who are joining forces to raise public awareness about safety issues in how schools are being reopened, as mandated by Governor Reynolds.

Participating groups in the coalition include: IowaFederation of Labor, AFL-CIO, Drive for Lives, Iowa Educators for a Safe Returnto Learning, Iowa Citizen Action Network, Iowa State Education Association, DesMoines Education Association, Iowans for Public Education,  Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement,  Western Iowa Labor Federation.

Jeremy Dumkrieger, co-founder of Iowa Educators for a Safe Return to School, a teacher in northwest Iowa going on 7 years, and Daniel Gutmann, special education teacher in the Des Moines area and founder of Drive for Lives describe what is planned and why this is of importance to so many.  Educators for a Safe Return to School is an online support group including thousands of teachers and school workers and concerned parents. Drive for Lives plans driving protests by parents and educators after Governor Kim Reynolds announced schools must hold at least 50% of classes in person. Iowans for a Safer Return to Learning is calling for mandated face coverings and local control of school boards for managing school openings. 

Keith Morgan, Story County Emergency Coordinator gives latest statistics on mass attacks. He warns that in times of stress such as these, the danger of mass attacks rises. He gives some information on what to watch for and how to respond, both as individuals and businesses or organizations.
