Funding Drive

KHOI recently held their annual fundraiser. They sent out a mailer and had an on-air phone drive while having a party at the studio. The result was fantastic! The studio raised $30,000 in November and December. Their operating costs for a year is $150,000.

To reach their fundraising goal KHOI has the 500 Families program. Any family or individual who donate $250 or more per year gets recognized through this program (donations can be anonymous). So far the studio has 55/500 families.

Ed Engle, newsletter editor for the Ames Area Amateur Astronomers, describes what happened the prior night, when aurora borealis was predicted in our area. He explains what causes aurora borealis (nothern lights) and also explains solar flares.

Bald Eagles have become media sensations through the power of the Internet. Learn about the Decorah eagle cam from its originator, Bob Anderson. There is additional information about the Philippines eagles. Bob’s Raptor Resource Project plans to grow an interest locally to save their national symbol from extinction. Ric Zarwell from Lansing, Iowa explains Golden Eagles and a national survey that indicates a positive trend in their overwintering status in Iowa and along the Upper Mississippi Refuge.

KHOI county reporters take a virtual tour to towns around Ames, starting with Story City which is celebrating the centennial of the Story City Opera House on Dec. 18, exactly 100 years after it was built in 1912. Second we visit Boone for a report of the recent travels of the Santa Express on the Boone and Scenic Valley Railroad. Third, we recognize the current exhibit of the Slater Area Historical Association commemorating the Great Train Wreck of 1913, another centennial. Our circle ends in Nevada at the recently opened Queen Anne Bed and Breakfast in a historic home built in 1878.

Join Us for the KHOI Winter Celebration Party

KHOI volunteers and board members will be going on the air to raise money for KHOI operations on December 10 and 11. There will be an open house throughout the day with refreshments. This beautiful framed print on art canvas of the Decorah Eagles by Iowa Artist Larry Zach will be on display at KHOI, and will be given as a thank you gift to the first donor contributing $1,000 or more to KHOI operations.

Festivities will culminate with the KHOI Winter Party tonight, Wednesday December 11 from 5:30 – 9:00 PM
