Our first order of business was announcing some of the results of yesterday's election. Barb Pedersen, committee chairperson of the voter services committee of the Ames and Story County League of Women Voters, was on hand to discuss the ways KHOI could make voter information --our candidate interviews and the local forums recorded by our volunteers, available to the public, both on broadcasts and through our website. Mara Spooner of the Fair Trade Store Worldly Goods, discussed their business model and the Benefit Events where part of the sales receipts will be donated to local organizations. We ended the show with two remarkable events coming up in the next few days.  Deborah Marquart, editor of the children's book The Moo Cow Came Traveling , described the book launch that will be held this Sunday, November 8, 2-3 p.m. at the Ames Public Library with the book illustrator, Dorothia Rohner and an appearance with author Mark Muholland ZOOMING in from Ireland.  And up in Briggs Woods by Webster City, Maureen Seamonds tells us of the annual harvest dinner for Legacy Learning with Kelly Boone leading the fun on Monday evening from 5:30 p.m. on Monday, November 9. Local Talk for Friday, October 29 started with recap of the news from this week from pages of Ames Tribune by Dennis Hart.  Virginia Nichols presented the third segment of her soil health story.  Susan Gwiasda invited Jason Ziph, with Ames Fire Department discussing October Fire Safety Month.  Yard waste can be delivered cost free to recycling area at 400 Freel Drive Saturday, October 30. Music was provided by Warren Zevon, Werewolves of London.

The reasons for an encounter with a belligerent raccoon are explored, then Dennis Hart provides a roundup of Iowa news. 

Laura Belin explains why the workers at John Deere are striking and the current status of the conflict with the plant management. She provides an interview with an Ankeny representative of the striking UAW (United Automobile, Aerospace, and Agricultural Implement Workers of America) who explains why 90% of the union members voted to strike "as long as necessary," especially after sacrifices are made during the Pandemic and John Deere's profits have increased dramatically.

Matt Scott, from Ankeny, describes his business, Iowa Parklands, that provides detailed maps of trails in Iowa Parks, including maps on bandana's. His web site also sells maps for download, posters, stickers, playing cards, and has a blog discussing the details of various Iowa's parks. He describes how his business connects with the love and memories people have about parks.
