Sia Agnihorti middle school student , a young woman who has set a positive example of a selfless act of kindness reaching out to our community asking us to help those less fortunate and those suffering from the COVID pandemic relief in India. Her fundraising cause, (Jars of Hope)  Sia shares the successes she is having raising money and awareness of the plight facing others.

Susan Qwiasda, City of Ames Public Relations Officer, provides update on opening of the Furman outdoor water park and city council meeting reminders; starting on June 1, City Council, Board, and Commission meetings will be held in person.

As we are able to do more live post-COVID road trips for Local Talk, hosts Gina McAndrews, Paul Wierson and Susan Franzen went back through the KHOI archives to pick our favorite trips from past years.  We visited with Lyn Wilkinson owner of Lake Robbins Ballroom, an amazing dance hall in the middle of a corn field. Following up on our recent story about Kate Shelley Park, Joe Reuter, owner of much of the former Kate Shelley farm, took us Walking in the Footsteps of Kate Shelley. With the restaurant at Nyland Corner opening again, we learned its history from former owner  Sandra Huemann-Kelley.. We heard Kay Munson's reminiscences of the 1930s attraction of the artesian spring filled Lake Comar. And finally Keri Rojas told us how the whole town of Webster City joined together to restore their historic Webster Theater to bring life back to Main Street after a major industry pulled out of town.

Mary Wilkins; ISU Extension and Youth Outreach Coordinator Education/Youth   reviews a number of activities and summer programs for youth .  Options include in person outdoor and activity packets designed to pick up and take home. 

Marlene Ehresman; Director of the Iowa Wildlife Center. Marlene reviewed what is involved to successfully overwinter “rescued” bats, the reasons for the large number of bats held this past season at the center and why the planned release dates faced delays. 

Susan Gwiasda, City of Ames Public Relations Officer reminds listens the Ames City Council will meet this evening and one item of special interest is the Council’s Mask Mandate for public areas and lets us know that the outdoor aquatic center opens memorial day weekend.  

Municipal Engineer, Tracy Peterson discusses the completion of the Welch Avenue project the design and amenities associated with it and the ribbon cutting to dedicate it’s completion.  She also provides an update on the progress of the Grand Avenue extension to south 16th avenue.
