Dennis Hart gives a summary of Iowa in the news from last week.

Rick Exner, is an Ames resident working with AMOS Immigration, an AMOS (A Mid Iowa Organizing Strategy) crisis response team for those at risk of being deported. Exner explains the Central Iowa community ID card, a community-building tool for inclusion for people without government IDs, to address basic needs such as medical care or identification for police. Exner is inviting everyone to get a community ID card to give that form of identification agency in our area. Details for that can be found here. Sunni Kamp, Executive Director of Story County CommunityFoundation speaks with Patricia Cane, from the Arc of Story County, introducing the services of that organization, which partner with local businesses, providers and community members to enrich the lives of people with disabilities. Story County Community Foundation is the umbrella organization for more than 165 different funds established by individuals, families, and nonprofit organizations to benefit Story County. In early November, it awarded it's annual grants to totaling $117,413. The Arc of Story County is one of the Story County Nonprofit organizations who received a grant this year.

Crystal Davis from the Ames Convention and Visitors Bureau gives a preview of upcoming public events for fun and activity in December.

Our first guest was Brittny Rebhuhn, director of Story Theatre Company's play, "Number the Stars," telling the history of Danish people saving Jews from the Nazis during World War II.  Our next stop was Gatherings in Nevada, where Evie Peterson told us about the first plans by citizens of Nevada to benefit from their new Main Street Iowa designation.  Pat Schlarbaum told us about nature programming on KHOI, starting with a phenology of junkos.  We ended with a recap of last night's Pantorium Session, "Stranger Than Fiction."

Leanne Harter, Story County Outreach and Special Projects Coordinator, started off the show with her monthly report, followed by Bill Yungclas continuing the significance of the role of Masonic Lodges in the development of American values.  Michaela Thompson, the featured artist for tonight's Pantorium Session (November 13), gave us some insights into how she writes her songs.  Mara Spooner, manager of Worldly Goods, came in to tell us about that non-profit, fair trade store, where they have designated Thursday, November 14, a KHOI benefit shopping night, from 4 to 7  when a portion of the sales will go to the station.

Following news from Digital Dennis, we heard tips on how to stay safe in the winter from Keith Morgn, Emergency Management Coordinator for Story County.  Then Veteran Chris McClure told us a little about the activities of the American Legion and how he was able to listen to KHOI when serving in Kuwait. Reggie Greenlaw, who'll be performing at tonight's Panitorium Sessions, sang "Tallest Man."  Finally, Paul Wierson joined us to tell us about the ceremony for Veterans at the Roland Story Middle School.

Then we turned to the big story of the week -- Iowa Natural History Foundation's purchase of the  4H camp (Clover Woods).  Joe Jayjack and Larry Stone described the arrangements of the sale and explained why it was important to maintain private ownership of this beautiful land on the Des Moines river.  Responding to Monday's story from "One Choice Iowa" was Dr. Caitlin Pedatic, Medical Director and State Epidemiologist for the Iowa Department of Public Health.  Finallly, Paul Wierson provided a lively preview Of Story Festival 2019.

Following Iowa news delivered by Dennis Hart, Shanda Burke described the concerns of "Informed Choice Iowa," an organization dedicated to challenging legislation requiring mandatory vaccinations which is holding a statewide conference in Des Moines on November 16.  In preparation for the school board election on November 5, we heard from all seven of the candidates for the school board.  Concluding our show Bill Jungclas, past grand master of Arcadia Masonic Lodge #249, came in to read the mayor's proclamation declaring November 1. 2019,  "Ames Masonic Lodge #249 Day" in honor of the 150th anniversary of the lodge in Ames. He also gave us a brief local history of the lodge.

Two recordings of the Pool Hall Waltz Band, a local Ames band in the late 1970's and early 1980's, including Paul Nelson, who helped build KHOI and served as its Chief of Operations, bookend a recorded conversation between Paul Nelson and Ursula Ruedenberg in 2017, about the founding and meaning of KHOI.

Drew Kemp, Director of Public Policy for the Ames Chamber of Commerce and Lawrence Cunningham, Chair of the Public Policy Committee for the Ames Chamber, explain the educational and advocacy of the Chamber, how they interact with their stakeholders. They encourage participation in the upcoming election November 5. The election is locally focused and addresses three areas of importance to Ames residence: governance, health care, and education.
