Cleora Stanley is the Des Moines artist hosted by KHOI during Art Walk - a celebration of coming back to public life in downtown Ames, last Thursday. Cleora tells us a little about herself and her impression of Ames.  

Valerie Williams, Executive Director of the local dance company, Co’Motion, and Design Intern Dani Steffes, announce that summer 2021 registration is now open for Kid’s Co’Motion. Kids Co’Motion is a three-week daily modern dance workshop for children from July 12 to 31, ending in a concert at the bandshell. The workshops train students aged 8-18 in dance technique, composition, artistic collaboration, and stagecraft. Dance experience is not required to participate. Information and weekly updates are at Facebook and Instagram (@kidscomotion)

Iowa’s Resource for International Service, or IRIS, is a non-profit, non-religious organization headquartered in Ames that works to promote international education, development, and peace through people-to-people exchange programs that develop and enhance citizen diplomacy. Del Christensen, Executive Director of IRIS, describes a current virtual hosting program underway between Iraqi families, which will culminate in leadership training in July, preparing Iraqi youth to lead volunteer projects in Iraq. IRIS is currently looking for businesses who are interested in sponsoring their 2021 Peace Day September 19th, a multi-cultural event and race that raises funds for IRIS while raising awareness of international human relations. Steven McMenamin, Iowa’s highway rest areas Administrator for the department of transportation, explains the vision, work, and politics behind Iowa’s exceptional rest areas. Special attractions that actually inspire rest area tourism, they are designed by artists to include historical exhibits integrated into the building and ground designs. An overview of the different themes and histories can be seen online.

Local Talk for Friday, June 4, 2021 included update of the news from the Ames Tribune by Dennis Hart.  Kofi Robinson from Hennepin County Minnesota provided his assessment of: How George Floyd's murder has changed our lives. Keith Abraham Ames Parks and Rec Director gave updates for Furnam Pool repairs and other Park Programs planned for this summer.  The hour was rounded out with a story from John Howe, Director of the Raptor Resource Project.  John provided an update on Peregrine Falcon banding at nest sites or eyries. Also, he explained death of two hatchlings at Great Spirit Bluff.

Citizenship, Ada Hayden Park, Community Gardens and Juneteenth

Betty Andrews, president of the Iowa Nebraska NAACP started the show by talking about the importance of exercising the rights of citizenship from Jury Duty to voting in local elections - and she ended the show by describing the celebration of Juneteenth. Friends of Ada Hayden (Erv Klaas, Mike Meetz, and Jeri Neal) then described the campaign of the early 1990s to develop the gravel pit on the  east edge of Ames into a park with trails, prairies, year round fishing, bike and walking trails, and home to wildlife of all kind from trout to foxes. Luke Spence, Nevada City Councilman, told us about the new Community Garden with ground level and raised beds, that is being started by the city of Nevada.

Dr John Paschen, Chair of the Story County Board of Health  provides updates, current numbers, cautions, concerns, and safe activities we will encounter during the summer months.  West Nile virus season is upon us and Iowa has reported its first case for this season so review of precautions to take to prevent or minimize likelihood of expose to this disease?

Sia Agnihorti middle school student , a young woman who has set a positive example of a selfless act of kindness reaching out to our community asking us to help those less fortunate and those suffering from the COVID pandemic relief in India. Her fundraising cause, (Jars of Hope)  Sia shares the successes she is having raising money and awareness of the plight facing others.

Susan Qwiasda, City of Ames Public Relations Officer, provides update on opening of the Furman outdoor water park and city council meeting reminders; starting on June 1, City Council, Board, and Commission meetings will be held in person.

Mark Lambert, City Attorney, updates on the repeal of the City of Ames mask mandate, County Supervisor mandate, State of Iowa updates, and how the city is changing back to more traditional way of operating.
