Dennis Hart provides a summary of the events covered in the newspapers of Iowa and ends his report by thanking our listeners with his upbeat message to “have a safe, healthy and happy week!”   

Jessica Butters with Prairie Rivers of Iowa informs listeners their main office has been  relocated to south Duff Avenue next to the Mucky Duck establishment.  Jessica provides a brief summary of her responsibilites with Prairie Rivers and discusses the basics involved with promoting plantings, and providing good habitat for the numerous native pollinators found in central Iowa.  Jessica also highlights the Prairie Rivers participation in the upcoming Ames EcoFair, will be located in the west lot adjacent to Ames City Hall, and scheduled for Saturday, October 1st from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM.

Susan Gwiasda, Public Information Officer provides a bit more information about the EcoFair and shares that there will be an open house honoring retiring City Finance Director, Duane Pitcher. Parks and Recreation Director, Keith Abraham provides an update on what’s happening in his department; including maintenance to the Ames Dog Park, the ribbon-cutting at Hira Park on Oct. 6, and summarizes the City Council approval to acquire a 50 acre parcel of land for a future park located in the western portion of the city, south of Ontario that encompasses portions of Clear Creek and its watershed.

Wolf Osterreicht provides an “on the spot”  report on the birds and otther critters he’s observed this morning in Ada Hayden Heritage Park.  Wolf will be checking with us periodically over the next few months.

Local Talk for Tuesday, September 20, 2022 featured a lot of good topics today starting with Dr. Jamie Kopper with the ISU College of Veterinary Medicine and Senior veterinary student Jamillah Kelly.  We learned a lot about the Veterinary College and Ms. Kelly’s contributions and appreciation for the Ames community.

Mike Meetz contributed a wonderful piece about recent tours of Ada Hayden Heritage Park.  Anyone physically challenged were encouraged to come to the park to receive a golf cart tour of the Park.  This event is gaining wonderful popularity and will return next year. 

Susan Gwiasda, Public Information Officer for the City of Ames had timely announcements to share:  There will be a ribbon cutting at 5:30PM Wednesday, Sep. 21 at Ada Hayden Park for Accessible Canoe and Kayak Launch facility.  Access Ada Hayden and Central Iowa Paddlers are to be commended for financial support for this worthy project. 

Eco Fair will happen in west parking lot of City Hall on Saturday, October 1 at 9AM to 1PM.  The City will have a lot of booths that feature conservation and sustainability themes.  Electric vehicles including all major makes and the City’s first public electric busses will be displayed. 

And a Town Budget Meeting is coming up November 1, 6PM City Hall with City Manager Steve Schainker.  Public is encouraged to bring ideas and priorities for the City budget process.

Julie Saxton with the Ames Police Department came onto Local Talk to talk about the Eighth Annual Mental Health Expo at Memorial Union Great Hall at 6PM – 8:30PM this evening Tuesday, September 20, 2022.

Twenty five vendors will be exhibiting their contributions to mental health in Central Iowa.  Free food and free parking is provided.

  Music was provided by Gloria Estefan and Miami Sound Machine:  “Here We Are, Rhythm is Gonna Get You and Conga.”  Also Petula Clark’s “Downtown” was enjoyed.

KHOI’s Sam Wormley and Mike Meetz Discuss Seasonal Change and explain the astronomical  phenomenon that causes it.

Story County Conservation Outreach and Communications Coordinator; Casey Struecker updates us on the fall activities planned/scheduled for the county parks and natural areas,  including volunteer needs for prairie seed harvesting and what to expect for this fall’s leaf color and where some of the county areas are best for viewing.

Susan Gwiasda Public Information Officer for the City of Ames will update us on Tuesday’s City Council meeting ribbon cutting and discusses the return of EcoFair just a few weeks away on Saturday, Oct. 1, in the City Hall west parking lot.  We also review the progress of the future gathering area being constucted East of City Hall and are given an update on the ribbon cutting and official opening of the new small craft launch for the physically challenged installed at Ada Hayden Heritage Park.

Dr. Molly Lee, Story County Board of Health: Schools are back in session; COVID-19 updates for Story County, fall vaccine/booster availability. Wealso visit a bit about funding sources for programs. Cover the Monkey Pox infection situation,  discuss the West Nile virus, and importance as a late summer disease and review the case of Poliomyelytis and its importance.

Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation:  Pat Schlarbaum visits with Joe Jayjack about the mission of the Foundation, its roll in helping to preserve Iowa’s natural areas and reviews some upcoming events that they are sponsoring.

Local Talk for Labor Day Monday September 5, 2022 featured a lot of good topics today starting with a summary of the news last week newspapers throughout Iowa by Dennis Hart.

Greta Anderson provided an excellent featured story from the archives for the special Labor Day edition.  Colin Gorden with the Iowa Policy Program discussed their important work from his office in Iowa City.

And in recognition of KHOI’s tenth anniversary a blessing of the studios at the Pantorium Building at 410 Douglas was broadcast.  Chief Golden Light Eagle, Loren Zephier from Greenwood, South Dakota provided song, prayer and sacred drum in 2014.  Bardic Poet, Joe Plum from Weller, Iowa, presented.  Mary Lightweaver was asked to speak and the sacred drum and song were provided by Medicine Eagle, Bob Barnhill to complete the blessing of the studio.

Music was provided by Joan Baez, “I Dreamed I Saw Joe Hill Last Night;” Pete Seeger, “Which Side Are You On;” and Woody Guthrie, “Farmer Labor Train”  and “This Land Is Your Land” to commemorate Labor Day 2022.

Susan Gwiasda Public Information Officer city council is seeking feedback on proposal to name the Ames Municiple Airport and Recreation Superintendent Courtney Kort with Ames Parks and Recreation will talk about the end of the season for Furman Aquatic Center, as well as a variety of other recreational options as we get into fall and cooler weather.
 
ISU Extension Mary Wilkins; Story County ISU Extension and Outreach Youth outreach Coordinator Introduces Katherine Mackenzie, Extension’s Ag & Natural Resource Coordinator. Some planned activities include:

Feathered Friends Tuesday; Favorite Late Summer Birds; KHOI personalities and community members share with listeners so of their favorite late summer birds as fall is less thann a month away.

Sam Wormley, KHOI Science Bytes cohost, Central Iowa Symphony cohost and KHOI Board member reviews Fall OLLI course offerings for those 50 years and older as part of the ISU Alumni Association’s continuing education program.

Susan Gwiasda Public Information Officer for the City of Ames  along with Stormwater Analyst Liz Calhoun is thinking about fall weather and landscaping improvements you can make as the weather cools to help absorb stormwater and encourage pollinators.  We visit about an arts grant used to educate the public about the waterway some storm water systems supply and also discuss the benefits of food composter and rain barrel rebates.)

Local Talk for Tuesday, August 23, 2022 featured a lot of good topics today, including Rex Heer.  Mr. Heer discussed the origin of his love of nature and how he addressed that commitment with a conservation easement on his property.

Paul Hertz who produces and hosts Morning Masterpieces at 9AM Mondays talked about KHOI’s Ten Year Anniversary.

Susan Gwiasda, Personnel Officer for the City of Ames invited discussed Rummage Rampage and City Council meeting this evening.  The location of the new Aquatic Center will be voted upon.

Local Talk concluded with a phenology about Barn Swallows.  Phenology is chronicling wildlife happenings in a journal for comparisons from year to year.

Local Talk for Monday, August 22, 2022 started with a weekly summary by Dennis Hart concerning the news from throughout Iowa 

Lauren Livingston with the Alzheimers Association in Iowa discussed their very important work providing information concerning Alzheimers disease. Sixty six thousand Iowans are inflicted with this disease and Alzheimers Association provide a safety net for afflicted families to receive support.  A fundraising Walk is scheduled for 8AM Saturday, October 15 at SPMI Center in the Research Park off Elwood Drive in South Ames.

Jean Eells with E Resources Group talked about her organization, and specifically how they help women landowners.  The advantages of covercrops and no-till farming improves soil health and tilth are emphasized by the E Resources Group.   Additional information can be located at eresourcesgroup.com.

Cornelia Flora, long time KHOI supporter and friend to the station voiced her joy with KHOI 10th Anniversary Celebration to be held September 18 at the station at 622 Douglas in Ames.
