We visit with Ames Area Arts Council, Director, Jennifer Brockpahler as she reviews the awards presented to this year’s volunteers, arts advocates and entrepreneurs, board members, art educators, and highlights their accomplishments.

Awesome Aerial Acrobats event lead by Tyler Harms, Director of Iowa Young Birders in conjunction with Wild Birds Unlimited of Ames and the Octagon Center for the Arts in observance of World Migratory Bird Day will be walking in downtown Ames to look for Chimney Swifts and Common Nighthawks open to the public but requested to call WBU (515) 956 3145 to register.

Story County Conservation Naturalist and Environmental Educator; Beth Waage reviews the May and early June events calendar, summer camps camping season (Hickory must be near full) as well as how interested folks can volunteer their time or become a member of Partners, the Friends Group of the Conservation Board.

Susan Gwiasda Public Information Officer for the City of Ames reviews the city council meeting and the bike to work week which will be highlighted by the Mayor’s Bike Ride to the Tedesco Learning Corridor along with

Recreation Superintendent Kourtney Cort shares spring and summer programming opportunities including classes for kids and adults, Yoga in the Park, and more. Also, she shares how the department continues to recruit for needed summer help.

Early plans are to gather at Mother’s Pub 7PM Friday Night, Great Hall of Memorial Union 3 – 10PM Saturday, and Brookside Park 11AM Sunday picnic. Susan Gwiasda, Public Relations Officer with the City of Ames included Ron Edwards Ames, Animal Shelter and Animal Control Supervisor. Ron Edwards talked about spring outdoor wildlife, what is normal, and when an animal may need human intervention (not often!).

ISU Extension Mary Wilkins discussed: May 24 Beekeeping 101 6-7 pm attend a live stream. May 26, 10:30AM: Gardening programs for youth – with Roland Library and with Reiman Gardens. Tuesday June 7 1PM: Growing Up Wild is a program for preschool aged children with an adult. And there’s: Day long program offerings are available for youth in kindergarten through 3rd grade and 4th grade and up.

Dr. Molly Lee with the Story County Board of Health updates us on the County

COVID-19 situation as well as providing an update and additional information with influenza.

We also review the Hepatitis Infection outbreak in children reported in the United Kingdom and also has been recently reported in the state of Alabama. Then we end our visit discussing precautions to take to avoid ticks and mosquitos and disease concerns as we spend more time outdoors.

Fred Love visits with us the upcoming Maximum Ames Music Festival September 15-18.

Susan Gwiasda Public Information Officer for the City of Ames provided information on City Council meetings, The Bike to work week and the Mayor/City Council Bike Ride south to the Tedesco Learning Corridor scheduled for 21st of May. Resource Recovery Plant Superintendent Bill Schmitt visits with us about the upcoming sixth annual Rummage RAMPage. An informational meeting is planned for non-profit organizations on Wednesday, May 6th. We also discussed the success of the Stash the Trash event held this past weekend and noted that 3,330 pounds of refuse was collected which does not include materials some of the independant individuals and smaller groups may have collected; a real success story- on a dreary, cool, wet, and windy day.

The Ioway Creek Stream Clean-up Day has been postponed until 21st of May.

We had inspiring guests in Katrina Williams, Ames Middle School math teacher and Cari McPartland and Diana Schmidt from Raising Readers in Story County, and Eric Smidt, Communications Director, Ames Community School District.

There is a very informative article in the The Ames Tribune about the prestigious national teaching award that Ms. Williams recently received. Suffice to say that after spending a few minutes with her I was inspired by her obvious dedication to her students and to her profession. The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and the Challenger Center showed how smart they are in awarding her a “Trailblazing Stem Educator.”

Cari and Diana highlighted the importance of supporting young readers. Their Summr Reading Buddies program will soon kick off for the summer. They are in need of volunteers. Check out https://www.raising-readers.org and sign up for what looks to be an amazing opportunity!

KHOI Spring Fundraising Concert

KHOI is pleased to announce its second annual spring fundraising concert featuring Avey Grouws Band with opener Matt Woods on Thursday, May 26 at 7:00 pm. The concert will be held at Stephens Auditorium and is part of KHOI’s spring fundraising drive.

Quad Cities based, Avey Grouws Band defies labels with their powerful sound, with blues, roots, rock and soul. Sophomore album, "Tell Tale Heart", was recorded in Nashville, TN with Grammy award winner, Casey Wasner (Keb' Mo', Taj Mahal) during the pandemic. Released September 2021, "Tell Tale Heart" debuted #7 on the Billboard Blues Album chart. Avey Grouws Band also hit #10 on the Billboard Blues Album chart with the 2020 debut album, "The Devil May Care".

Matt Woods is both a native of Iowa, and a longstanding purveyor of its diverse music scene. As a seasoned performer of many local, regional and national venues, Matt has developed a distinct style while staying true to his love of traditional American music. Woods is well versed in the many shapes this music can take; from traditional delta, hill country and urban electric blues, to gospel, country and folk music.

Advance tickets are $20 for general admission seats and $50 for VIP reserved seats (orchestra pit and first 11 rows in center). Day of show tickets will be $5 higher. Livestreaming will also be available for $15/single and $25/group. VIP tickets include premium seating and limited edition show poster.

Local Talk for Friday, April 29, 2022 started with recap of the news for this week from the Ames Tribune by Dennis Hart.

Deborah Bunka, Outreach Coordinator with the Iowa Farmer’s Union. Deborah provided calendar of upcoming events and their contact at 515-451-8492. And she shared a quote from a Clear Lake member, “Don’t lose faith, don’t lose the fight!”

Susan Gwiasda, Public Relations Officer with the City of Ames included Arbor Day tree planting at Stewart Smith Park. Check website for possible postponement. Justin Clausen, Public Works Operations Manager, provided update on spring maintenance projects. Also, employment opportunities were laid out for the city.

John Howe, Director of the Raptor Resource Project, talked about their recently fledged Canada Goose from their Decorah Eagle Cam nest. Also the 20+ year female eagle was discussed as she has apparently failed to successfully nest for the first time in 16 years.

Local Talk for Monday, April 25, 2022 started with a news summary from throughout Iowa by Dennis Hart.

Dr. Tom Rossburg, Professor from Drake University talked about prairie ecology, roadside prairie plantings and prairie walks he does at Doolittle Prairie each Thursday throughout the summer.

Time to Roll café owners Payne and Payton Roberts talked about their nostalgic business in North Grand Mall that features burritos and rolled ice cream.

Kathy Svec, Ames History Museum, talked about a lecture series upcoming. Also she shared stories about the Railcar that was first public transportation in Iowa and the Midwest between Iowa State College and two miles into Ames. She also focused on a Martin Student Housing in Ames made available to black college students.

Todd and Stephanie Burras of Wild Birds Unlimited join us for our monthly “Feathered Friends Tuesday”. We talk about migrant birds being seen in the area. We learn about their semi annual bird feeder cleaning day, its importance to bird health. Its conducted by the Gilbert Boy Scout troop as one of their major fundraisers.
