People from Ames Communities took us to four countries on three continents to describe Christmas celebrations there. Sandra Unguec told us about South Sudan. Karen Stein Corrales spoke nostalgically about Christmas in Nicaragua (and among immigrants in the US). And Gina McAndrews described her Christmases in Australia and Oaxaca. We heard music from all as we shared celebrations around the world.

Local Talk for Friday, December 17, 2021 included a news summary of the week from the Ames Tribune by Dennis Hart. Steve Veysey, member of the Cold Water Alliance provided an update of the Save Bloody Run campaign. A 11,600 head cattle feedlot has been constructed in the watershed of this Outstanding Water designated trout stream. Mr. Veysey included update of litigation against the proposed feedlot and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. More information can be learned at SaveBloodyRun.org. Susan Gwiasda with City of Ames included Jason Clausen, Public Works Supervisor, discussing the recent derecho force winds that impacted Ames this week. According to Public Relations Officer, Gwiasda Ames residents incurred only two outages that were recovered within two hours and 45 minutes. Ames residents were in good hands during this storm. Also, think of ways to honor upcoming snow removal efforts and realize snowplow operators need our love and respect this time of year. Michaela Van DerBerg with ISU Extension provided dates for many worthwhile, upcoming workshops and presentations in January. Leanne Harter's monthly Story County Report consisted mainly of warnings about dangerous weather. Dana James, publisher of Black Iowa News, described her online publication, available at blackiowanews.bulletin.com Craig Schultz, editor of The Ogden Reporter told how independent papers cover the news in small Iowa towns. Sheila Smith, Manager of Ben Franklin in Nevada described how this vintage store stayed open every day throughout the Pandemic and is celebrating its 50th Christmas in Main Street Nevada.

Vince Evelsizer, Biologist with the Iowa Dept. Natl. Resources; Clear Lake unit, Discusses Gray Fox ecology, biology, and research need with citizen science involvement. Vince also discusses the dead Cougar found in Poweshiek County this past weekend and summarizes the ecological needs of this species. Erica Place, Outreach Coordinator for Story County Conservation joins us for our monthly visit, to discuss their upcoming programs, events, and winter activities. Susan Gwiasda Public Information Officer for the City of Ames reminds listeners of upcoming council and committee meetings as well as the Holiday schedule office hours and closings. Vanessa Baker-Latimer, Housing Coordinator provides an update on the affordable housing subdivision being developed on the old Ames Middle School site (321 State). Also, Vanessa will share some information on the upcoming MLK Celebration and essay contest.

Local Talk for Friday, December 10, 2021 was lead off with Dennis Hart's news summary from pages of Ames Tribune. Greta Anderson reported on an upcoming event at Dog Eared Books in downtown Ames. Genevieve Gornichev will do a reading of her book "Witches Heart" and enjoy cocktail hour on Saturday, December 11 at 7PM. Merry Rankin, Sustainability Coordinator for ISU and City of Ames reminded everyone to fill out a Climate Action Survey at CityofAmes.org website. 5PM tonight Friday night is the closing. The Sustainable Steering Committee will meet 6PM December 21 at City Hall. And save the date January 20 annual meeting of Smart Business Challenge at Reiman Gardens. Noel Herbert with Sustainable Solutions Group will present keynote address. Wolf Oestreich gave an Ada Hayden report about Trumpeter Swans. And Anna Burkhardt, Avian Ecologist with Department of Natural Resources provided background to these magnificent waterfowl, Trumpeter Swans. Music was provided by Stephen Stills and Manassas, "Johnny's Garden" and "Fallen Eagle."

Paul Wierson and Susan Franzen took a Road Trip to the Boone Scenic Railroad thanks to the KHOI archives. Our first stop was from a road trip to Boone to speak with Fenner Stevenson, at the Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad about the Santa Train. Next we heard from James H Andrew, benefactor of the James H. Andrew Railway Museum and museum Director Mike Wendell describing the museum and the regional relevance of railroad history.

We start the show by announcing four entertainments taking place this weekend. Dan Chaseof the Ankeny Community Theatre told us about GEEZERS. Mischelle Levi told us about Little Women:Merry Christmas.The Central Iowa Symphony will be performing "Byond the Three B's according to conductor Eric McIntyre "a sonic voyage through almost three hundred years of music history." And for daytime entertainment on December 4 Ogden is presenting Candy Cane Lane (Thanks to Sara Jordan-Heintz for complete schedule of events).
Continuing our exploration of the changes affecting small town newspapers, we consulted Mark Witherspoon, former Editorial Adviser to the Iowa State Daily, about the effect of technology and social media on newsgathering in the digital age. He discussed new non-profit news sources, such as Iowa Capital Dispatch. Laura Belin, publisher of the Blog "Bleeding Heartland," brought us up to date on how consolidation, twitter, and non-profit news sources are changing the way we can access news -- as well as the challenges that lie ahead.

Local Talk for Tuesday November 30, 2021 featured Tyler Harms, Stephanie and Todd Burras focusing on the bird world and bird surveys coming up. A Redtailed Hawk discussion included various color phases of buteo hawks in general but focusing on field marks to look for in identification. A belly band is common with redtails. Other hawks this time of year are the Rough-legged hawks and Northern Harriers. Susan Gwiasda with the City of Ames invited Paul Tauke to discuss trees in Ames. Susan announced Supplemental Input Climate Action Committee meeting Dec. 1, 6-8PM at Water Treatment Plant on 13th St. The next Steering Committee meeting is Dec. 14th and next City Council meeting was Dec. 21st. Anna Banana rounded out the program with her Tune in Tuesday report. George Harrison's What is Life was the music selection.
The December regularly scheduled Ames City Council meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 14.
The Ames City Council, which serves as the Steering Committee for establishing a Climate Action Plan, will meet from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 21, at the City Hall Council Chambers, 515 Clark Ave., to discuss establishing a carbon reduction goal. The public is welcome to attend the meeting or watch it streaming off the City’s website or YouTube and Facebook pages.
